I think Gesina has colic :-( My mom said I had colic as a baby so I'm blaming her for wishing this on me! We have her well baby appointment on Monday so hopefully I learn more about what to do about the near continuous crying in the evenings. I also have an appointment with the gastrointestinal doctor on Tuesday to help figure out the acid reflux/NG weaning issues. Gesina has had the NG tube out since Wednesday (when she last pulled it out). She does cry and struggle for her evening feeds, which is when I've had to put her NG tube in in the past, but if she is colicky than I'm going to try to just ride those feedings/times out and hope her late night feedings go well. She may lose weight and/or I may cave and NG tube her, but I have a plan! I'm also just hoping that the colic issues resolve sooner rather than later as she is 11 weeks old. I couldn't possibly express the level of frustration I feel when she is in hour 5 of crying for no reason...
While I ride the colic wave, here's a pick of Gesina hair that I put on Facebook. I'll update after her doctors' appointments.
Jackie I feel for you. I have vivid memories of when you had colic and how stressful it was. Uncle Terry said today that Jeff also had colic which I had forgotten and how stressful it was for them. Just remember this too shall pass. It is not your fault! Nothing could calm you when you were little. Hang in there, maybe the doctors can have some suggestions that maybe were not available to my generation for colic. Love you.

ReplyDeleteHang in there Mama:) GOOGLE, is your life link in the night! Lavender oil became our salvation when Pru was so sick at 5 weeks. Nothing Dr's could do, she was too young. I went to the web...there was SOOOOOO much GOOD information. Read what mama's have gone through and what worked for them. Sometimes, the seemingly "way to simple" to work....? DOES;) Like your mama said, this too shall pass, but OH MY GOSH for super tired, super weary, mamas! We tried so many things. Pru didn't sleep, at all, even as a new born, unless she was on the breast. Then......wide awake. After she got so sick...if anything looked even remotely like a possibility...we tried it. Somethings worked, some didn't, but W T H, we tried. From music to nature sounds(lolol....NOPE) for about 3 months, she liked Irish music(Emerald Rose)....then it was TRAIN, I didn't care what it was at that point. If it worked...I was good with it. So was her VERY tired mama! Kells used some kind of gas drops too...one worked really well, the other 2-3 did not. And like the lady above this post said, if your nursing or using your breast milk...your diet can make all the difference. Is the house too warm at night? Do you use a cool mist humidifier for moisture in the air? Too much light, not enough light...too quiet or too noisy...it's different for every baby, but O M G trying to find out what gives a baby relief...will make a Grandma or mama CRAZZZY...Just try to relax and go with the flow. Let the laundry back up, order in for supper, shut the phones off...whatever you need to do to survive. Does she like the swing? or the bouncy seat thing? sitting inclined in water? (yes, it's perfectly acceptable to use the kitchen sink...!) propped up, belly time, back time, whatever works at the time-time....one day....VERRRRRY far down the road, you'll look back with pride and advise a new mama with a knowing smile...."hang in there, it'll be ok, you'll get through it & baby will too...." huggzzz sweet Lady....
ReplyDeleteCameron also had colic. The only thing that would quiet him down was to take him outside at midnight and let him look at the stars. I wouldn't recommend that at this time of year though:) After I took him back in the house, of course, he started crying again. But at least we had some time that it was quiet. You just have to ride it out I guess.
ReplyDeleteAww, sorry to hear she has colic. Alex did too, and I know it is so tough. You may have already heard of this but we rented Happiest Baby on the Block from the library (http://www.happiestbaby.com/5-ss-system-may-help-colic-symptoms/) and found some of the tips quite helpful. In particular, we found that tight swaddling did help, coupled with LOUD white noise, and often it was using many of their tips in conjunction (e.g., white noise, swaddling, swaying, laying on her side, etc.). For Alex, it wasn't just any white noise, but it was specifically a vacuum cleaner sound that she liked. Ryan found an audio clip of it online and burned like 10 CDs of that noise. We had copies of that DVD everywhere. We would turn it up pretty loud (it would have to be, for her to hear it over her crying). You may want to experiment with different types of white noise and see what she likes. I know every baby is different- just keep on trying different strategies, and hopefully something will work!
